Daybreak Community Church of Colchester will be the "Green Up Team" for the fourth consecutive year at the Vermont City Marathon on May 24. This year they will be using it not only to help the environment, but to help Vermont kids as well.
They are using the opportunity as a fundraiser for Vermont's Department of Children and Family(DCF). Instead of taking pledges for every mile they run in the marathon like some other fundraising marathoners, they will take pledges for every minute they are picking up trash.
The money raised will be used to help purchase playground equipment and sponsor summer camps for children in the foster care system. The members of Daybreak soend the day at Battery Park and at the Waterfront helping to tear down and clean up behind the marathoners and onlookers.
"Daybreak has been a great asset to the marathon in terms of their energy, positive spirit, and a 'get it done attitude,' reports Joe Connelly, Run Vermont's Technical Director.
Brent Devenney, pastor at Daybreak and also a foster parents says. "This year we hope not only to 'green up' but to use it to make a difference in the life of a child." Daybreak is hoping to raise several thousand dollars with the event. Thise wanting to join Daybreakers as "Green Team" participants or wanting to pledge towards the fundraiser can contact Daybreak at 802-338-9118 or info@daybreakvermont.org. They will also be accepting donations to the fundraiser at the marathon
